On February 16, 2018 Asians across the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year. And millions of people in China, Vietnam, and other asian countries will celebrate the Lunar New Year. The new year day celebration is based on the new moon day of the first Chinese lunar month. The year of the dog officially begins on the Start of Spring day, which is February 4, 2018. Start of Spring day is based on the sun’s position at the 315th degree on the tropical zodiac.
The dog is the 11th of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs and 2018 is the year 4,715 in the Chinese calendar. The year 2018 is the year of the earth dog, also known as the brown or yellow dog. Each of the five elements is associated with a dog year, in a repeating 60 year cycle:
- The earth dog years are 1958 and 2018
- The metal dog years are 1910 and 1970
- The water dog years are 1922 and 1982
- The wood dog years are 1934 and 1994
- The fire dog years are 1946 and 2006
The dog is a yang sign, its fixed element is metal, its ascribed season is autumn, and the dog time of day is between 7–9 pm. People born in this two hour segment have the dog as their ascendent sign and therefore share dog qualities or have a great affinity for people born in the year of the dog. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) internal organ clock theory, 7–9 pm is the pericardium hand-jeuyin time of day.
Dogs are loyal, wary, honest, and personable. The dog is a protector and is helpful in times of need. Dogs may express a momentary rash of anger, especially if wronged, but do not hold grudges when justice or remediation are addressed. Dogs tend to be friendly and egalitarian, although capricious at times. Dogs see through people’s bad intentions and guard against those that stand in the way of harmony.
2018 is the year of the earth dog. This dog is impartial, careful, balanced, efficient, realistic, kind, and generous. Although quiet, the brown dog wisely persuades and inspires others.
The US Department of the Treasury celebrates the new year by issuing lucky money.
